Sacred Heart Parish Church, Bregenz
Sacred Heart Parish Church, also known as Herz-Jesu-Kirche, was built in the early 20th century. Its construction was inspired by the 1896 centenary of the Tyrolean consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The foundation stone was laid on 24 May 1906. The church was blessed in 1908 and consecrated in 1912. Most of the costs were covered by donations from local residents. In 1958, it was officially established as an independent parish.
The building is a Neo-Gothic basilica on a cruciform plan, designed by the Stuttgart architect Joseph Cades. It is built of yellow-red exposed clinker brick, a material that was unusual in the region, where stone or plastered façades were more common. The double-tower front, with towers about 62 metres high, recalls Norman church design, while pointed arches and vertical lines show Gothic influence.
Inside, the nave is lit by a high clerestory above the side aisles. Stained-glass windows from 1958 by Martin Häusle add colour and biblical scenes. The high altar, completed at the start of the First World War, shows reliefs of the Nativity, the Last Supper, and the Ascension.
