San Blas Square and District, Cusco (must see)

Uphill and northeast of Main Square, you'll find the San Blas District. The area is known as the artists' quarter and has been described as one of the most picturesque parts of Cusco. It's quieter here, too, with inviting cafés and beautiful views over the rest of the city. The road leading up to San Blas Square is known as the San Blas Slope. Numerous art galleries and workshops line the way, making a walk through the area a pleasure for the senses.

San Blas Square lies at the center of the district. It is bordered by Carmen Bajo Street at its lower end and Tandapata Street and features a large central fountain. The surrounding cobbled streets are steep and narrow, with Inca stone steps adding to the area's historic character. The Incas called this part of town the Salt Cave. Ever since those times, this charming barrio has been associated with artisans. It is also believed that the area was popular with the Inca elite.

The district's name changed after the arrival of the Spaniards, who named it in honor of Saint Blaise, a third-century bishop traditionally associated with healing people and animals.

There are two attractions on the square that you won't want to miss. First, look for San Blas Church on the north side, recognizable by its simple white façade and stone bell tower. On the opposite side stands the Hilario Mendívil Museum and Family Workshop. Mendívil was a well-known local artist, particularly recognized for his distinctive religious figures with elongated necks.
