The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, founded in 1916, offers an extensive overview of the region’s natural heritage, featuring a wide variety of indoor exhibits covering themes such as astronomy, birds, insects, geology, mammals, marine life, paleontology, plant life, and the history of the Chumash Indians. The museum’s vast collection includes more than 3.5 million specimens, featuring detailed dioramas that depict Southern California habitats alongside displays of fossils, including the world’s largest mammoth tusk. The recently renovated Gladwin Planetarium, the only one on the Central Coast, offers daily shows that explore the cosmos with engaging visuals, making it a popular stop for visitors of all ages.

Outside, the museum grounds extend over 17 acres of oak woodland along Mission Creek, inviting visitors to explore interactive outdoor exhibits such as the Museum Backyard and Nature Club House. These spaces provide hands-on experiences and play areas, ideal for families and children. A brief stroll away, the Prehistoric Forest features life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, adding a dynamic and immersive element to the visit. The museum grounds also include a butterfly habitat where guests can observe delicate species up close.
