Set across 30 acres with views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Santa Barbara Zoo features over 500 animals from over 146 species. The layout includes naturalistic habitats for African lions, Masai giraffes, red pandas, anteaters, gorillas, and penguins, along with a dedicated area for California condors. The giraffe deck allows for hand-feeding, and the Australian Walkabout provides walk-through access to kangaroos and wallabies. Other highlights include the Ridley-Tree Animal Kitchen, where food preparation for the animals is on display, and the Zoo Train, which circles the grounds and offers a full overview of the park’s layout.

Interactive experiences are integrated throughout the zoo. The Kallman Family Play Area includes climbing features like a large rope spider web and a dinosaur egg structure. The “Climb for Condors” rock wall highlights ongoing efforts to protect condors, while goat brushing is available in the barnyard. Wildlife encounters, such as feeding Humboldt penguins or learning about giraffe care, are offered by reservation. Seasonal programs like Engineer for a Day on the Zoo Train add themed activities for younger visitors. The grounds include picnic areas, a hilltop café, and a manageable walking layout that caters well to families.
