Santuario della Madonna di Montalto (Sanctuary of the Madonna of Montalto), Messina

The Sanctuary of the Madonna of Montalto, perched atop Caperrina Hill, is a place of deep historical and spiritual significance. Founded in 1294, during the turbulent period following the Sicilian Vespers, the sanctuary originated as the Church of Saint Mary of Montalto, alongside a Cistercian monastery.

According to tradition, the site of the church was divinely chosen. A dove supposedly traced the outline of the future building in flight, an event said to have been witnessed by prominent officials of the Messina Senate. The sanctuary became a symbol of faith and protection, particularly associated with the legend of the Madonna’s miraculous intervention in defense of Messina against besieging French forces.

The sanctuary stood for more than six centuries, although the adjoining Cistercian monastery was suppressed in 1866. Tragically, the devastating 1908 earthquake completely destroyed the complex. A temporary church was erected shortly afterward, making Montalto one of the first religious sites to be restored following the disaster.

The present sanctuary took shape during subsequent reconstruction, with its sea-facing façade and two imposing bell towers completed in 1930. From the square in front of the church, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over Messina and the Strait of Messina.

The viewpoint is also associated with Pope John Paul II, who visited Messina in 1988. A life-size statue of the pontiff now stands on the belvedere, depicting him gazing out over the city and the strait.
