Sedgwick County Zoo, Wichita (must see)

The Sedgwick County Zoo was established in 1971 with significant support from the Sedgwick County Zoological Society. Over the years, it has gained national and international recognition for its commitment to conservation efforts and the successful breeding of rare and endangered species. With a remarkable collection comprising over 3,000 animals representing nearly 400 species, the zoo has steadily grown in popularity, earning its status as the premier outdoor tourist attraction in the state.

Key exhibits include the Downing Gorilla Forest, featuring a Congo village replica and gorilla exhibit, and a 2000 addition with lions, red river hogs, and meerkats in a kopje-themed area. Penguin Cove, inaugurated in 2007, houses Humboldt penguins. Another notable exhibit showcases giraffes, elephants, zebras, and a black rhinoceros, with six African elephants added in 2016 and a new elephant exhibit unveiled in May of the same year.

Sedgwick County Zoo hosts a range of special events throughout the year, such as Boo at the Zoo during Halloween, Zoobilee fundraiser, and seasonal exhibits like the Illuminations light display during the holiday season.
