Serbian Museum of Corfu, Corfu

Serbian Museum of Corfu, Corfu

The Serbian Museum of Corfu stands as a poignant reminder of one of the most difficult chapters in Serbian history, while also highlighting the island’s role as a place of refuge. Located in a neoclassical mansion in the heart of Corfu Town, the museum is dedicated to the tragic events of World War I, when thousands of Serbian soldiers and civilians retreated to Corfu after the collapse of their homeland. Following their long and harrowing journey across Albania in the winter of 1915–16, the survivors were taken in by the people of Corfu, who offered shelter and assistance at a time of immense hardship.

Inside, the museum houses a moving collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents that tell the story of this wartime exodus and the temporary settlement of the Serbian army and government-in-exile on the island. Visitors will find military uniforms, weapons, medals, regimental flags, and personal belongings of soldiers, many of which were carefully preserved and donated by families and institutions. These items give a tangible connection to the sacrifices and struggles of the Serbian people, while also showing the solidarity extended by Corfiots during those years.

One of the most moving aspects of the museum is its attention to the memory of those who did not survive. Thousands of soldiers perished from disease and exhaustion and were laid to rest on the nearby islet of Vido, often referred to as the “Blue Graveyard,” where their bodies were committed to the sea. This chapter is presented with dignity and reverence, allowing visitors to understand both the tragedy and the resilience of the Serbian nation.

For tourists, the Serbian Museum of Corfu offers more than a historical account; it provides a space for reflection on the enduring bonds between Greece and Serbia. It is a reminder of how the island became a place of compassion in Europe’s darkest hours, and it continues to stand as a testament to shared sacrifice, remembrance, and friendship between nations.
