Maitland Monument, Corfu

The Maitland Monument in Corfu is one of the island’s most distinctive neoclassical landmarks, located in the heart of Spianada Square. Built in 1821, the monument was dedicated to Sir Thomas Maitland, who served as the first British Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands from 1816 to 1824. Often referred to as “King Tom” by locals, Maitland was a powerful figure who played a central role in shaping the administration of the islands during the period of British rule. The monument reflects both the authority of Maitland and the political atmosphere of Corfu in the early 19th century.

Architecturally, the Maitland Monument is a striking circular structure, resembling a classical rotunda. It features twenty Ionic columns made of white stone, which support a domed roof, creating an imposing presence in the city’s main square. Its design draws inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman temples, aligning with the era’s fascination for classical revival styles. The monument was crafted by the British military engineer Colonel George Whitmore, who also contributed to other important projects during the British Protectorate.
