Shree Lumadhi Bhadrakali Temple, Kathmandu

The Shree Lumadhi Bhadrakali Temple, dedicated to Devi Bhadrakali, is a prominent Hindu temple situated in Kathmandu. Located adjacent to Tundikhel and near the Sahid Gate on the eastern side, the temple is a significant religious site known also by the name Shree Lumadhi Bhadrakali. It ranks as one of the key "Shaktipiths" in Nepal, a title that denotes a shrine of particular importance in the worship of the Goddess.

Bhadrakali, a form of Goddess Kali, embodies qualities of prosperity, auspiciousness, and beauty, as suggested by her Sanskrit name. Also revered under the names "Gentle Kali" and "Lazzapith," the deity is deeply rooted in local and regional lore. According to mythological texts like the Vayu Purana and Mahabharat, Bhadrakali emerged from the Devi's wrath during a significant religious event insulted by Daksha towards Lord Shiva. Descriptions in Tantra Rahasya detail her formidable appearance, featuring three eyes and multiple arms-bearing weapons, alluding to her powerful and protective nature.

The temple itself was established in 1817, originally known as “Mudule Thumpko,” following a divine revelation where the goddess's statue was unearthed. This historical site, now protected by the Nepal Army, overlooks significant landmarks including the Prime Ministerial office at Singha Durbar. Its architecture and deity bear influences from Western India, enhancing its cultural fusion and significance.

A fascinating local legend associated with the temple's location tells of a farmer whose bread turned to gold, leading to the name "Lumarhi/Lumdi Devi’s temple," with "Lumdi" meaning 'golden bread' in Newari.

The temple is particularly vibrant during the Navratri festival, celebrated in September-October, which attracts numerous devotees who come to pay homage to Bhadrakali. Additionally, the site is central to the worship of protector goddesses Lumadhi Ajima, Watu Ajima, and Kanga Ajima, with special rituals held every three days. A unique celebration known as Nyatamaru Ajima goddesses Jatra observed every 12 years, marks another pivotal event for the community and devotees in Kathmandu, underscoring the temple's deep cultural and spiritual importance.
