Tundikhel, Kathmandu

Tundikhel, Kathmandu

Tundikhel, a significant and historic landmark located in the heart of Kathmandu, serves as a vital communal space amidst the urban sprawl of the capital. This expansive, grass-covered ground, rectangular and oriented north-south, is nestled between Ratna Park to the north and Sahid Gate to the south—the latter being a memorial to the martyrs of 1941.

Dating back to the early 18th century during the Malla period, Tundikhel has played a multifaceted role in Kathmandu’s societal and cultural life. Historically, it has been used as a military parade ground, and during both World Wars, it was the assembly point for Gorkhali soldiers heading to battlefields abroad. The field has also hosted horse races, religious festivals, and rock concerts, and serves as a public park and grazing ground for cattle. Notably, a large tree once stood at the center of Tundikhel, known as Khariko Bot or Chākalā Simā (Round Tree), where Nepal's leaders made significant announcements until its removal in the 1960s.

Tundikhel is often described as the "lungs of Kathmandu" due to its role in providing fresh air in the densely built-up city. It remains a popular spot for local residents who visit to enjoy the open space for exercise and relaxation. In 1960, the field even witnessed the landing of a small aircraft, a Pilatus Porter, which was part of a Swiss expedition to the Himalayas.

The site is rich in folklore, with tales of deities and demons, and is surrounded by numerous sacred shrines. Various religious festivals are celebrated here, adding to its cultural significance. Originally extending 3–5 kilometers in length and nearly 300 meters in width, making it one of Asia’s largest parade grounds, Tundikhel has seen its size reduced by more than half due to urban encroachment. Despite this, it continues to be a cherished part of Kathmandu’s heritage and daily life.
