Sidi Abdellah Ben Hassoun Marabout, Rabat
The Sidi Abdellah Ben Hassoun Marabout is one of the most revered religious shrines in Sale, located just opposite the Great Mosque. This 19th-century structure is dedicated to Sidi Abdellah Ben Hassoun, a 16th-century Sufi cleric and teacher who is considered the patron saint of travelers. Much like Saint Christopher in the Catholic tradition, he is believed to offer protection to those on the move.
Originally from the Slas in the Rif, Sidi Abdellah Ben Hassoun (d. 1604) gained widespread recognition for his erudition, selflessness, and powerful oratory. He preached at the Great Mosque of Sale, drawing large crowds-including the Sultan himself-who sought his blessings. His disciples included prominent figures such as the mujahid M’hamed al-Ayyachi. Following his death, Sultan Moulay Ismail had a dome erected over his tomb, which later became the shrine that stands today.
This shrine remains a major pilgrimage site, particularly during two key religious events: the Ashurah Festival, when locals dress in period costumes and gather to honor him; and the Mouloud (Prophet’s birthday), which features a spectacular candlelit procession. During this ceremony, elaborately decorated candles are carried to the mausoleum, where they remain for an entire year until the next Mouloud celebration.
Over time, the shrine has undergone expansions, incorporating portions of the adjacent cemetery and adopting a refined architectural style. Although it is an important spiritual landmark, only Muslims are permitted entry. Today, the Mausoleum of Sidi Abdellah Ben Hassoun continues to be a place of pilgrimage and devotion, reflecting the deep religious and cultural traditions of Sale.
