Sikorski Memorial, Gibraltar
The Sikorski Memorial stands in solemn remembrance of the tragic 1943 B‑24 Liberator crash that claimed the life of General Władysław Sikorski, the Commander‑in‑Chief of the Polish Army and Prime Minister of the Polish government in exile. Sixteen passengers and crew perished, with only the pilot surviving.
The current memorial, unveiled on 4 July 2013, on the 70th anniversary of the crash, is the third iteration to mark this historic tragedy. It replaced earlier monuments from 1945 and 2003, which were located closer to the runway of what was then Royal Air Force Gibraltar.
Crafted by a Polish firm using Szydłów sandstone imported from Poland. A prominent ship’s propeller from the crashed aircraft sits at its heart, mounted on a heavy plinth. Around it, a semi‑circular wall holds tablets inscribed with the names of the victims and narrative panels explaining the event. At the apex perches a carved Polish military eagle, and the emblems of the Polish Navy and Air Force are embedded along the wall.
