Sint Johannes de Doperkerk (Saint John the Baptist Church), Maastricht

The Saint John the Baptist Church, located in the Maastricht district of Limmel, has long served as the parish church of the Roman Catholic community in this former village northeast of Maastricht. The church, as it stands today, is a neo-Gothic structure designed by Carl Weber in 1864. Although not classified as a national monument, it was added to the municipal monument list of Maastricht in 2002. Its most significant art historical feature is an 11th-century baptismal font.

Limmel had an independent parish by the 11th century, later merging with Amby and Borgharen before regaining independence in 1834. Its original Romanesque church, built in the 11th century, featured a Gothic choir (1400) and a restored tower (1630). Damaged in multiple sieges, it was demolished in 1861. A neo-Gothic replacement was built in 1863, with the tower rebuilt in 1867. Architect Auguste Taurel expanded the church in 1913, adding a choir, sacristy, transept, and aisles.

The Saint John the Baptist Church is a neo-Gothic cruciform basilica built from brick and Namur stone, with a slate-covered roof. Its square tower is topped with a constricted spire, featuring a tower cross and weather vane. The chancel and transept are lower than the nave, and additional sacristy spaces extend from the choir.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery, and two notable tombstones are placed on its exterior walls: a memorial plaque for the De Crassier family and a tombstone of the Bettonville family, who resided in Bethlehem Castle in the 19th century.

The church houses several notable artifacts, including an 11th-century Romanesque baptismal font carved from Namur stone, featuring mythical reliefs and a copper lid from 1890 with antique medallions. Other highlights include a late 18th-century credence table, a simple oak pulpit from 1657, and a two-manual organ by Pereboom & Leijser, installed after 1870. An 18th-century organ by Guillaume Robustelly, originally made for Hoogcruts Monastery, was briefly kept here.
