South Franklin Street, Juneau (must see)

South Franklin Street is one of Juneau’s most recognizable downtown streets, combining historic buildings, cultural landmarks, restaurants, shops, and galleries along the waterfront. One of its notable features is Elizabeth Peratrovich Plaza, named in honor of the Tlingit civil rights leader whose efforts contributed to the passage of Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, the first such law in the United States. The plaza features a large mural by Tlingit artist Crystal Worl, along with interpretive displays that highlight Peratrovich’s life and the broader history of Alaska Native rights.

The street also reflects Juneau’s diverse cultural heritage through its public art and historic buildings. City Hall features the large mural “Raven Discovering Mankind in a Clamshell” by Haida artist Bill Ray, depicting a traditional Haida creation story. Nearby, the Red Dog Saloon at 278 South Franklin is one of Juneau’s best-known historic establishments, featuring Old West-style décor and memorabilia, including an unclaimed pistol associated with Wyatt Earp. Other nearby landmarks, such as Filipino Hall and the restored Senate Building, provide additional connections to the city’s immigrant, political, and commercial history.

Today, South Franklin Street remains a popular place to explore local shops and galleries. Visitors can find Alaska Native artwork, including carved poles, jewelry, and other handmade pieces, as well as locally produced gifts and souvenirs. The Silver Hand symbol identifies artwork created by Alaska Native artists, while the Made in Alaska logo indicates products manufactured within the state, helping visitors distinguish locally made items from mass-produced souvenirs.
