St. Anthony of Padua, Ottawa

St. Anthony of Padua, Ottawa

Located on Booth Street in Ottawa, within the vibrant Little Italy district, stands Saint Anthony of Padua, a significant Roman Catholic church. Father Fortunatus Mizzi, a Maltese priest, laid the foundation of this church in 1908.

Unfortunately, the initial small chapel succumbed to a devastating fire in 1913. However, it was soon replaced by a new church, designed by architect Guido Nincheri, and completed in 1913. Tragically, just four years later, this magnificent structure fell victim to another fire, causing substantial damage. Determined to rebuild, the church was reconstructed with minimal use of wood.

Throughout its history, Saint Anthony of Padua has served as a prominent gathering place for Ottawa's Italian-Canadian community. Adjacent to the church is Saint Anthony's School, a Catholic elementary school. Additionally, the church provides a home base for the Saint Anthony Italia Soccer Club, renowned as one of Ottawa's most competitive amateur soccer teams.

Dante Square (Piazza Dante), located in front of the church, serves as a lively venue for major social events, with the highlight being Italian Week. This beloved celebration, commencing with the Feast of Saint Anthony every June, draws in several thousand attendees.
