St Augustine’s Church, Wellington

St Augustine’s Church, Wellington

Saint Augustine's Church in Wellington represents Anglican architectural elegance and historical importance. Initially part of the Lower Hutt Parish of Saint James, the town of Petone saw the emergence of this fine timber church as a result of the collaborative efforts of architects Frederick de Jersey Clere and John Swan. Clere, serving as the Diocesan architect for the Anglican Church at the time, brought to life a design in the Gothic style, marking the church with a striking and well-resolved aesthetic. The central tower, originally supporting New Zealand's tallest spire donated by parishioner Thomas Price, defined its landscape until a storm in 1954 necessitated its removal. Despite this, the church retained its architectural integrity, with the only significant addition being a Lady Chapel in 1936.

The foundation stone of Saint Augustine's was laid by the Governor, the Earl of Ranfurly, on 12 July 1902, on land acquired in Britannia Street. The church was dedicated the following year, although it would not be consecrated until 1921. Its historical value is further underscored by its role as the first church of the Anglican parish of Petone, serving the community for nearly a century. The partnership between Clere and Swan is notable, contributing to the region's architectural heritage.

Architecturally, Saint Augustine's is praised for its relatively simple yet elegant Gothic style, particularly noted for its fine interior space adorned with unpainted timber panelling and joinery. Despite the loss of its spire, the church remains a dominant landmark in Petone, cherished for both its beauty and its place in the community's history.
