St. Michael's Church, Luxembourg

Set between Luxembourg’s historic center and the Bock fortifications, on Rue Sigefroi, Saint Michael’s Church is smaller and less imposing than Notre-Dame Cathedral. Yet historically, it takes you much closer to the beginnings of Luxembourg City itself.

Standing in front of the church, pause to appreciate its modest stone façade. This is the oldest religious site in the city. In 987, Count Siegfried had a chapel established here near his fortified castle on the Bock promontory. The church that followed was destroyed, rebuilt, altered, and enlarged several times over the centuries. Its present appearance largely dates from 1688, although later restorations have left it with an interesting mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements.

If the church is open, step inside. The interior is intimate compared with Luxembourg’s cathedral, so it doesn’t take long to explore. Walk toward the sanctuary and look at the Baroque high altar, created in the 18th century. Then turn around and look toward the organ gallery. Saint Michael’s contains Luxembourg’s oldest surviving historic church organ, with an ornate case dating from 1662. Organ and choral concerts are occasionally held here, so it is worth checking the current program before your visit.

Once you leave the church, continue toward the Walls of the Corniche, which begin just a short distance away along the edge of the Old Town. Follow the path beside the old ramparts and look down into the Alzette River valley. The Corniche is often called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony,” and indeed, it offers some of the finest views in Luxembourg City.

Indeed, Saint Michael’s is an ideal stop before walking the Walls of the Corniche. In just a few minutes, you can see one of Luxembourg’s oldest historic sites, enjoy its quiet interior, and then step outside onto one of the city’s most scenic walks.
