Summer Archbishop's Palace, Bratislava

The Summer Archbishop's Palace in Bratislava serves a significant role both historically and in contemporary governance. Initially constructed in the 1600s for the prelates of Esztergom, the palace transformed into its current Baroque splendor during the tenure of Archbishop František Barkóczy, with architect F.A. Hillebrandt at the helm. This architectural marvel is celebrated for its exquisite Rococo décor and an impressive English garden, emblematic of the grandeur typical of the era.

Throughout its history, the palace has adapted to various needs, including serving as a military hospital during the Napoleonic wars, where the main room was divided to accommodate beds for wounded soldiers. Today, it houses the Slovakian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Notably, the palace retains only two original art pieces-a fresco and an altar from its chapel-highlighting its rich historical tapestry.

While generally not open to the public, the palace doors are unlocked for one special occasion annually during the Doors Open Days. This event offers guided tours that showcase selective parts of the palace such as the green room, mirror room, pink room, the chapel, and the conference room, allowing a rare glimpse into the opulent interior and significant history of this distinguished building.
