Sundhollin Swimming Pool, Reykjavik

Sundhollin Swimming Pool, Reykjavik

Sundhollin Swimming Pool is Reykjavík's oldest dedicated indoor swimming pool, opened in 1937. Designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson, it's located at Barónsstígur. This pool was among the first in Reykjavík to use geothermal water, supplied through a 3 kilometers pipe from Laugardalur by the public utility Laugaveitan. Its completion was delayed from 1930 to 1937 due to the Great Depression. The building showcases a minimalist white exterior with an Art Deco influence and features tall, narrow windows. Inside, the pool is notable for its arches and tiled changing rooms. The main pool measures 25 x 10 meters with varying depths. Facilities include hot tubs, and from the sundeck, one can view Guðjón's Hallgrímskirkja.

The pool quickly became central for swim instruction, mandatory for schoolchildren since 1927, and a key training site for pool sports. Originally, swimming was gender-segregated, and nudity was common. The pool also served as a public bath when such facilities were rare in Reykjavík. In 2010, Icelandic filmmaker Héðinn Halldórsson highlighted Sundhöllin in his documentary "The Palace," focusing on elderly early morning swimmers and staff.
