Swan Point Cemetery, Providence

Swan Point Cemetery is a historic garden cemetery established in 1846 on a 60-acre tract beside the Seekonk River. The grounds later expanded to more than 200 acres, with winding lanes, rolling lawns, mature trees, ponds, and river views. Its landscaped setting reflects the 19th-century rural cemetery movement, which created burial grounds that also functioned as quiet public parks.

The estate contains a wide range of funerary art and architecture. Visitors can see carved angels, obelisks, family mausoleums, and monuments in Gothic Revival, Classical, Romanesque, and Arts and Crafts styles. Notable features include the granite administration building and historic chapel, the Barnaby Monument with its mourning figure, and Memorial Grove’s large natural megalith. Older slate markers transferred from former burial grounds preserve examples dating from before the cemetery opened.

Many political leaders, artists, reformers, soldiers, and industrial figures are buried here. The best-known grave belongs to horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, whose small marker stands in the Phillips family plot. Other interments include Civil War general Ambrose Burnside, women’s rights advocate Elizabeth Buffum Chace, and RISD founder Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf. Visitors may explore on foot, bicycle slowly, or drive, while respecting funerals and the cemetery’s quiet character.
