TeleferiQo (Quito Cableway), Quito

TeleferiQo (Quito Cableway), Quito (must see)

The TelefériQo is a popular tourist attraction in Quito that provides stunning panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The gondola lift runs from the edge of the city center up the east side of Pichincha Volcano to the lookout point at Cruz Loma, covering a distance of 2,237 linear meters. The ascent takes about twenty minutes, rising from an altitude of 3,117 meters to 3,945 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest aerial lifts in the world.

Opened in July 2005, the TelefériQo serves as both a tourist attraction and a gateway to hiking to the summit of Pichincha, which is an active stratovolcano. A photo ID is required to purchase a lift ticket, and visitors must retain the ticket stub for the return trip. This policy serves as a built-in alert system in case hikers do not return when expected.

The top of the lift offers tourists many photo opportunities and observation points, as well as a public restroom, a small cafe, and a few shops. However, much of the retail complex sits unoccupied. It is important to note that due to the increased altitude and wind on the mountain, it is cooler than the city and is susceptible to fog, especially in the mornings. The height of the upper station is enough to cause symptoms of altitude sickness in some individuals.

The visitor center at the base of the TelefériQo includes the VulQano Park amusement park, restaurants and a food court, and the world's highest go-kart track, among other attractions. The park is a popular destination for families and offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages.
