Texas State Cemetery, Austin

Texas State Cemetery, Austin

The Texas State Cemetery (TSC) in Austin is a significant and historic site, encompassing approximately 22 acres just east of downtown Austin. Its origins date back to the burial of Edward Burleson, a notable figure in the Texas Revolution and the vice-president of the Republic of Texas. As time progressed, the cemetery evolved beyond its initial purpose, expanding during the Civil War to serve as a Confederate cemetery.

This expansion continued over time, allowing for the inclusion of graves and cenotaphs of various prominent Texans and their spouses. This has led the Texas State Cemetery to become a notable place of rest for many of Texas' key figures, contributing to its status as a popular tourist destination. Its importance and location have earned it the colloquial title of the "Arlington of Texas," drawing a parallel to the famous Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, due to the prominence of those interred and its close proximity to the seat of government.

The layout of the cemetery is divided into two main sections. The smaller section accommodates approximately 900 graves of prominent Texans, signifying their contributions and legacy within the state. The larger section is dedicated to over 2,000 marked graves belonging to Confederate veterans and their widows, reflecting a significant part of Texas' history.

With a capacity for 7,500 interments, the Texas State Cemetery is currently about half full. This includes plots that have already been selected by individuals who are eligible for burial at the site. The cemetery's ongoing use and its role in commemorating Texas' history continue to make it a place of reverence and interest, both as a historical site and as a final resting place for many of Texas' influential figures.
