Thanh Ha Terracotta Park, Hoi An

Thanh Ha Terracotta Park, Hoi An

Thanh Ha Terracotta Park was meticulously designed in 2011 by architect Nguyen Van Nguyen, a native of Thanh Ha village, who drew inspiration from the traditional methods of the village's craftsmen. Spanning an expansive area of nearly 6,000 square meters, the park is a testament to the enduring legacy of pottery making.

The park is divided into five distinct functional areas, each offering a unique perspective on the history and craftsmanship of Thanh Ha pottery. These areas include Nam Dieu village, Creativity Workshop, Trade Promotion, Pottery Museum, and An Outdoor Exhibition Area, each with its own narrative woven through symbolic pictures and artifacts.

Thanh Ha village has long been renowned for its exquisite pottery, bricks, and tiles, including the iconic Yin-Yang tiles that adorn many roofs in the old city of Hoi An. The park celebrates this legacy through interactive exhibits and displays that showcase the village's rich history and cultural significance.

Modeled after the traditional houses of pottery craftsmen, the Terracotta Museum immerses visitors in the artistry and techniques of pottery making. The museum's interior reflects the elements of a typical pottery workshop, complete with kilns, potter's wheels, and presentation areas, providing visitors with a glimpse into the daily life of artisans.

The park's architecture and design draw inspiration from the Cham and Sa Huynh building techniques, as well as the two types of kilns used in the village: the updraft and downdraft kilns. Visitors can explore galleries dedicated to showcasing terracotta products from other Vietnamese villages and learn about archaeological excavations revealing insights into ancient Cham and Sa Huynh civilizations.

As visitors ascend the stairways within the park's buildings, they are enveloped in the symbolism of the updraft kiln, where hot air rises towards the heavens. The top floor offers panoramic views of the sky, evoking a sense of transcendence and connection to the ancient traditions of pottery making.
