The Lime Tree Gallery, Fort William

The Lime Tree Gallery, Fort William

Lime Tree An Ealdhain Gallery opened in 2003 as a purpose-built contemporary art gallery within a small hotel and restaurant complex. Its name comes from Gaelic and means “the place for creativity.” The gallery was designed specifically for exhibitions, with a clear layout, controlled lighting, and neutral spaces that allow visitors to focus on the artworks without distraction.

The gallery presents touring and commercial exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Since opening, it has shown work linked to national collections and artists such as David Hockney, Goya, Andy Goldsworthy, and Henri Matisse. Exhibitions change regularly and include painting, photography, sculpture, and printmaking, with short wall texts that support an informal, self-guided visit.

The gallery also serves as a studio base for visual artist David Wilson, whose work is on permanent display. Entry is free, and a small shop sells prints, ceramics, glass, jewelry, textiles, and cards. Many visitors combine their visit with food or a drink at the on-site restaurant, which focuses on Scottish cooking with a French influence using seasonal local ingredients.
