The Old Church, Sinaia (must see)
The Old Church (Biserica Veche) is the earliest surviving church in the town and a cornerstone of its history. Built between 1690 and 1695 under the reign of Prince Mihail Cantacuzino, it was erected as part of the original Sinaia Monastery complex, inspired by the holy monastery of Mount Sinai in Egypt. At the time of its construction, the area was little more than a remote mountain settlement, and the church played a crucial role in establishing Sinaia as both a spiritual and cultural destination in the Carpathians.
The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and exemplifies the Brâncovenesc style, which blends Byzantine and Renaissance influences with local traditions. Its stone walls, modest proportions, and frescoed interior reflect the architectural taste of late 17th-century Wallachia. Inside, visitors can admire carefully preserved frescoes painted by Pârvu Mutu, one of the most renowned artists of the era, whose work gives the church both artistic and devotional importance.
Though small compared to later additions in Sinaia, the Old Church remains an essential landmark. It was the first church in the region to introduce permanent monastic life, housing monks who shaped the area’s religious character. Over the centuries, it witnessed visits from royal families, foreign travelers, and pilgrims alike, gaining recognition as a protected historical monument.
Today, the Old Church offers tourists a glimpse into the beginnings of Sinaia’s identity, long before the town became famous for its royal palaces and resorts. Stepping inside connects visitors to centuries of faith, artistry, and tradition that continue to define the spirit of the region.
