The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Ottawa

The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Ottawa

The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra is a comprehensive orchestra located in Ottawa, comprising professional, student, and amateur musicians. Boasting approximately 100 musicians, the OSO stands as Ottawa's largest orchestra, enabling it to present an extensive repertoire of 19th and 20th-century symphonic works, including compositions by Canadian artists.

In 1944, Ottawa musicians formed an orchestra led by conductor Allard de Ridder. Initially called the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, it was later informally known as the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra. Lack of funding led to its disbandment in 1960. The National Arts Centre then introduced the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO), which replaced the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1965, former members of the Ottawa Philharmonic formed the Ottawa Civic Symphony. In 1976, it became the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Initially, concerts were held at Ottawa High School but later moved to the National Arts Centre. Maestro Alain Trudel has led the orchestra since early 2016.

The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra is guided by a mission statement focused on enriching the community and fostering public appreciation and interest in symphonic music. The orchestra fulfills its mission through various activities such as the concert series, educational outreach programs, and a mentorship initiative.
