Theatre de la Huchette (Huchette Theatre), Paris

Theatre de la Huchette (Huchette Theatre), Paris

Located in Paris' Left Bank, specifically in the Latin Quarter, the Huchette Theatre is a small but renowned venue that has been showcasing plays by the illustrious Romanian-French playwright Eugene Ionesco for over 50 years. Its absurdist double-bill of "The Lesson" and "The Bald Soprano", collectively known as "Spectacle Ionesco", has been in continuous repertory since 1957. Additionally, a third play is periodically introduced into the repertoire.

Despite its intimate size of only 85 seats, the Huchette Theatre achieved a world record for nonstop theater performances before 2020, with over 19,000 shows viewed by more than 2.5 million people. Visitors have the opportunity to experience both shows on the same day for €40, and Wednesday performances are accompanied by English subtitles. The theater also presents other productions, with individual tickets priced at €28.

For historical context, Marcel Pinard assumed ownership of the theater in 1952, introducing the works of Eugène Ionesco, alongside those of Jean Genet, Federico García Lorca, Ivan Turgenev, and Jean Tardieu. However, after Pinard's passing in 1975, the theater faced the threat of closure. To ensure the continuation of productions, the actors who had performed the Ionesco double bill since 1957 formed a limited company. Today, the Huchette Theatre is regarded as a legendary Parisian establishment that should not be missed.

Tip:
Keep in mind that the theater tends to be crowded, especially during the summer months. As seating is not reserved, it is advisable to arrive early. Join the bustling crowd around the front door and prepare to be entertained by the uproarious performances on offer.
