Torre d'Anto (Anto Tower), Coimbra

The Anto Tower (Torre de Anto) in Coimbra is a historic medieval tower that once formed part of the city's defensive walls. Originally known as Torre do Prior do Ameal, this square-shaped structure overlooks the Mondego River and stands as a reminder of Coimbra’s military past. Having lost its defensive function in the 16th century, it was transformed into a residential space, adopting its current appearance with only minor alterations over the centuries.

The tower gained its modern name due to its association with the renowned poet Antonio Nobre (1867–1900), who lived there as a student in the late 19th century. His presence is commemorated with an epigraphic plaque on the facade, paying homage to the poet’s melancholic and introspective works. The poetic inscription highlights the tower’s literary significance and cements its cultural legacy in Coimbra.

Today, the Anto Tower serves as a museum dedicated to Coimbra’s fado tradition, showcasing artifacts that celebrate the city’s rich musical heritage. At times, it has also housed an art gallery under the name House of Crafts or Museum Center for the Memory of Writing (Casa do Artesanato or Núcleo Museológico da Memória da Escrita), reflecting its evolving role in the preservation of local history and culture. Visitors can explore the tower’s four floors, which are connected by a narrow spiral staircase, and admire its well-preserved medieval stone exterior, arched entrance, and traditional windows. Classified as a National Monument since 1935, the Anto Tower remains one of Coimbra’s most significant historic sites, drawing visitors interested in its layered past and artistic contributions.
