Torre di Porta Terra (Tower of Porta Terra), Alghero

Torre di Porta Terra (Tower of Porta Terra), Alghero

The Tower of Porta Terra is a significant historical landmark in Alghero. Dating back to the 15th century, it served as the primary entrance point to the fortified town until the late 19th century. Originally named Porta Reale, it was adorned with the stone coat of arms of the Aragon throne, symbolizing its importance as a gateway to the city.

The tower was equipped with a lifting drawbridge that regulated access to and from the city. Guarded vigilantly, the drawbridge was raised at sunset and lowered at dawn, ensuring the security of Alghero's inhabitants. Legend has it that even a king was subject to these strict regulations, highlighting the tower's role in maintaining order and security.

Though the drawbridge no longer exists, the Tower of Porta Terra stands as a testament to Alghero's rich history. Saved from demolition during the dismantling of the city walls, it now serves as a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions and services that celebrate the heritage of Alghero. Through multimedia presentations and informative displays, visitors can embark on a journey through the city's past to its vibrant present.
