Trasimena Gate, Perugia

Trasimena Gate, Perugia

The Trasimena Gate, also known as Porta Trasimena, stands as one of Perugia's most iconic entrances, rooted in its Etruscan origins from the 3rd century BC. Known by various names such as the Gate of San Luca, Porta della Madonna della Luce, Porta Luzia, Porta Senese, and Porta Santa Susanna, it reflects the rich history and layers of cultural significance surrounding the city’s ancient fortifications.

Originally constructed as part of the Etruscan city walls, the gate was later modified during the 14th century. The base retains its original Etruscan structure, while the pointed arch and external decorative elements, including a sculpted cross and crescent, are medieval additions. The crescent, intriguingly, is thought to either represent the moon or a roach fish, symbolizing the connection to Lake Trasimeno.

Facing westward toward Lake Trasimeno, from which it derives its primary name, the gate served as a key route for travelers and trade. It also played a role in the lives of the Baglioni family, who believed the gate had propitiatory powers and would cross it before heading into battle.

Adjacent to the gate are the churches of San Luca and Madonna della Luce, from which some of its alternate names originate. At the left side of the gate, a travertine lion stands guard, while the arch above features sculptural adornments of symbolic and historical value.

Porta Trasimena is one of Perugia's seven original Etruscan gates and later became one of 22 city gates spanning the two defensive walls built during different eras. Today, it offers visitors a tangible link to Perugia’s layered history and a remarkable glimpse into the city’s architectural evolution.
