Trefethen Family Vineyards, Napa
One of Napa Valley’s pioneering wineries, Trefethen Family Vineyards has been crafting estate-grown wines since 1968, blending tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for the land. The winery’s roots, however, stretch even further back to the Eshcol winery, commissioned in 1886 by James and George Goodman and designed by Scottish sea captain Hamden McIntyre. The original estate, with its gravity-flow winery system, survived Prohibition by producing sacramental wine but later fell into disuse by the 1940s.
Eugene and Katie Trefethen saw the potential of this historic property and transformed it into a modern winemaking powerhouse. Their dedication to restoring both the vineyards and the 19th-century wooden winery building was recognized in 1988 when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it Napa County’s only surviving structure of its kind.
Trefethen Family Vineyards gained international acclaim when its 1976 Chardonnay won first place in its category at the 1979 Wine Olympics, a competition organized by Gault Millau. Today, Trefethen continues to produce food-friendly, cellar-worthy wines, including their renowned Dry Riesling and HāLo Cabernet Sauvignon. Sustainability remains at the core of their philosophy, from vineyard management to winemaking.
A visit to Trefethen Family Vineyards is as much about the experience as it is about the wine. Guests are welcomed by a tree-lined driveway leading to the estate vineyards and the historic winery, where tastings offer a deep dive into the flavors of Napa. Culinary excellence is also part of the estate’s identity, with Chef Chris Kennedy crafting dishes inspired by Trefethen’s extensive gardens and pairing them seamlessly with their wines.
Trefethen is more than just a winery-it’s a living history of Napa Valley’s winemaking excellence, where the past and present blend into a rich, flavorful experience.
