Trondheim Tinghus (Trondheim Courthouse), Trondheim

Trondheim Courthouse (Trondheim Tinghus) is not just a legal institution but also a significant architectural and historical landmark. Designed by Hjalmar S. Bakstad, this courthouse represents Scandinavian architectural functionalism, known for its simplicity and functionality. Construction began in 1937 but was halted due to World War II, during which it served as the headquarters for the military organization Todt. After the war, construction resumed, and the courthouse was completed in 1951.

One notable aspect of Trondheim Courthouse is its portal, adorned with artwork by Nic Schiøll. The entrance features two large metal doors with medallions depicting scenes of agricultural and industrial labor, reflecting Norwegian cultural themes. A statue of Lovsigemannen, symbolizing an ancient Norse lawmaker, stands between the doors, emphasizing Norway's legal history.

The portal's walls display ceramic bas-reliefs by Jens von der Lippe, depicting legislators and law enforcers throughout history, starting with King Magnus VI, who established Norway's first civil law code. These artworks underscore the continuity of legal tradition in Norwegian society. Bronze reindeer sculptures around the courthouse pay homage to Norway's natural environment and heritage, commonly seen in urban spaces.

The courthouse facade features a post-WWII frieze depicting symbols and figures significant to Trondheim's history and is constructed with Trondhjemite, a local igneous rock. A memorial on the building's corner honors ten Trondheim residents executed by German occupiers in 1942, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II.
