United Institutional Baptist Church, Greensboro

United Institutional Baptist Church, Greensboro

United Institutional Baptist Church in Greensboro is a historic congregation with deep roots in both faith and social justice. Founded in 1930 and located on East Market Street near Murrow Boulevard, the church became a cornerstone of the community, literally and spiritually, with its 1952 building inscribed “TO THE GLORY OF GOD A.D. 1952 REV. C.W. ANDERSON PASTOR.” The current red-brick sanctuary, rebuilt and renovated toward the end of the 20th century, features a prominent tower, vibrant stained glass windows, and a mural of Christ-each element adding beauty and meaning to the worship experience.

From its earliest years, the church has played a pivotal role in the fight for justice, particularly during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. As noted by current Pastor Freeman, United Institutional has been a place of spiritual strength and encouragement for both local members and national leaders, who found inspiration in the preaching of the “Ole Time” gospel. The church continues to live out this legacy by equipping individuals for service and embodying the message of Christ’s Kingdom.

Sunday worship begins bright and early at 7:30 a.m., but the church's doors-and heart-remain open throughout the week, offering daily activities that encourage fellowship, growth, and community outreach. Beyond spiritual offerings, visitors can also stop by the on-site gift shop, a charming bonus for those looking to take home a piece of inspiration.

Even from the street, the church's stained glass windows captivate passersby. One window in particular, visible through the locked glass doors, offers a striking view-soaring above the staircase, it draws the eye upward, inviting reflection and awe. Whether you're a long-time member, a curious visitor, or simply passing by, United Institutional Baptist Church continues to stand as a beacon of hope, faith, and purpose in Greensboro.
