The University of British Columbia (UBC) stands as a prominent public research university encompassing multiple campuses. Its origins trace back to 1908, making it the oldest university in British Columbia. UBC consistently secures a place among Canada's top three universities. Backed by an annual research budget of $600 million, UBC propels forward more than 8,000 projects annually.

The Vancouver campus finds its location in the University Endowment Lands, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) to the west of Downtown Vancouver. Noteworthy within UBC's domain is TRIUMF, serving as Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, featuring the world's most extensive cyclotron. Alongside the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and Stuart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute, UBC, in collaboration with the Max Planck Society, has pioneered the first Max Planck Institute in North America, with a specialization in quantum materials. The UBC Library system, encompassing 21 branches, ranks among Canada's largest research libraries, boasting a collection of over 9.9 million volumes. The acquisition of the Okanagan campus in 2005 established UBC's presence in Kelowna, British Columbia.

In the year 2017, UBC's affiliations included eight Nobel laureates, 71 Rhodes scholars, 65 Olympians, ten members in both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society, and 208 fellows in the Royal Society of Canada. Notably, UBC's alumni list features three Canadian prime ministers, among them the inaugural female prime minister of Canada, Kim Campbell, and the current prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
