Via dei Mercanti (Merchants' Street), Salerno

Merchants’ Street is one of the oldest and most defining routes through the historic center of Salerno, with origins dating back to around the year 1000. Known in its early days as Drapparia, the street took its name from the many fabric shops that once lined it during the Lombard period. Stretching for about one kilometer, it runs through the core of the old town, linking key squares, churches, and historic buildings along its course.

As you walk along the street, its medieval character becomes immediately apparent. Narrow passages, stone façades, and a sequence of arches reveal an urban layout shaped gradually over centuries. Starting from Portanova Square, located at the east end of the street, and moving west, you will soon notice the Church of the Most Holy Crucifix on your left, recognizable by its yellow façade. Continue a short distance, on the right side you will find the Church of Saint Peter at Court, set slightly back from the street and partially framed by surrounding structures, making it easy to miss if you are not looking carefully.

A few steps further, on the same side, you will come across the Virtual Museum of the Salerno Medical School, marked by its blue-painted entrance portal. Directly opposite, on your left, stands Pinto Palace, now home to the provincial art gallery. Today, the street remains lively, with shops, cafés, and local businesses continuing a tradition of exchange that has defined it for centuries. Modern storefronts occupy historic structures, creating a subtle contrast between past and present.
