Museo Archeologico Provinciale di Salerno (Provincial Archaeological Museum of Salerno), Salerno

The Provincial Archaeological Museum's roots trace back to the Lombard era, with the first records of the monastic complex of San Benedetto dating back to 868. After facing destruction in 884 and subsequent reconstruction under Abbot Angelario, the monastery attained abbey status in 930.

Throughout the 15th century, the complex underwent various restoration and embellishment projects, culminating in its transfer to the Olivetan congregation in 1581. The Napoleonic laws led to the suppression of the abbey, transforming the church into a Royal Theater. It wasn't until 1857 that the church was restored to its original liturgical function. Following a period of military use and storage, the church was eventually returned to the Curia.

The museum's building is a captivating multi-layered complex. The ground floor exhibition features remnants of the southern and eastern quadriportico of the Church of San Benedetto. Additionally, traces of the loggia of Castelnuovo Reale, once a royal palace where Queen Margherita of Durazzo spent her final years in the early 15th century, add another layer of historical significance to the site.

Exploring the museum unveils not only artifacts from the Lombard fortifications discovered below street level but also a rich tapestry of Salerno's layered history.
