The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, located in Hanoi's Cầu Giấy District, serves as a crucial cultural and educational institution dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the diverse cultural heritage of Vietnam's 54 officially recognized ethnic groups. The concept for the museum was sanctioned on December 14, 1987, signaling the start of a significant cultural project. The construction phase spanned from 1987 until 1995, culminating in the museum's grand opening to the public on November 12, 1997.

This museum displays a variety of exhibits, artifacts, and educational materials that explore the traditions, customs, and daily life of the country's 54 officially recognized ethnic groups. Its extensive collection includes over 15,000 artifacts, 2,190 slides, 42,000 photographs, 237 audio tapes, and 373 video tapes.

The main exhibition building of the museum is architecturally significant, designed by Ha Duc Linh, a Tày ethnic group architect. Linh opted for a design shaped like a Đông Sơn drum, which is deeply symbolic in Vietnamese culture. The interior architecture was the brainchild of French architect Véronique Dollfus, adding an international dimension to the museum's design ethos.

In 2013, the museum expanded its scope with the addition of a second exhibition building focused on the cultures and peoples of Southeast Asia. This new addition was designed in the shape of a kite, providing a thematic continuation of innovative, culturally resonant architecture. This expansion enhances the museum's educational mandate, offering visitors broader insights into the ethnological context of the region.
