Westerkerk (Western Church), Utrecht

Located on Catharijnekade, the Western Church (Westerkerk) in Utrecht was constructed in 1891 under the supervision of A.W. van Beeck Calkoen, though the design is attributed to master carpenter H. van Dijk. Initially serving the Doleantie community (later part of the Reformed Church from 1892), the church had a seating capacity of 1,028 and remained in religious use until 2018.

Architecturally, the Western Church is notable for its eclectic style with neoclassical elements. It features a hall church layout, making it the last remaining Protestant hall church in Utrecht after the Oosterkerk on the Maliebaan was demolished. The interior boasts a wooden barrel vault, contributing to its acoustics. In 1913, architect P. Houtzagers simplified the façade, while a 1955 restoration by P.G. van Nieuwkerk added a stepped gable and clock. The entrance to the community building was located on Bergstraat.

A standout feature of the Western Church is its historic organ, built in 1813 by Georg Heinrich Quellhorst for the Saint Plechelmus Basilica in Oldenzaal. Acquired by the church in 1893, this instrument is now recognized as a national monument and remains in use despite the church’s transformation.

By 2016, ownership of the church shifted from the Reformed Congregation to a project developer, and on January 6, 2018, the last worship service was held. After a major renovation, the building reopened on June 20, 2019, as Bunk Utrecht, a hotel and restaurant. While no longer a place of worship, the historic Quellhorst organ continues to play-now featured in evening concerts rather than early Sunday services.

The Western Church was one of four Protestant churches in Utrecht named after cardinal directions and the last to close. Today, it stands as an example of how historic religious architecture can be adapted for modern use while preserving key elements of its past.
