Women & Their Work, Austin

Women & Their Work, based in Central Austin, is a nonprofit organization and gallery dedicated to contemporary visual and performing arts. Established in 1978, the gallery has been instrumental in promoting and nurturing the art created by women in Texas and beyond. Over its 40+ years of operation, it has significantly influenced Austin's cultural landscape through various groundbreaking art exhibitions, performances, and educational programs.

The gallery serves as a vital platform for women artists to express new ideas in contemporary art. It has played a crucial role in the development of over 1,900 artists' careers, presenting numerous visual art exhibitions, music, dance, theater events, spoken word performances, literary readings, film festivals, and educational workshops.

The Women & Their Work has earned national acclaim, being the first Texas organization to receive a visual art grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2001, it was invited to participate in the prestigious Warhol Initiative. Its work has been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and in esteemed publications like Art in America and ArtForum.

The organization is engaged with the Austin community, especially in educating people about contemporary art. Since 1986, it has developed a comprehensive education program, reaching children in underserved Austin schools. This program includes gallery tours, artist talks, hands-on workshops for students, in-school performances, classroom projects, and teacher workshops.
