Woodbridge N. Ferris Building, Grand Rapids

Woodbridge N. Ferris Building, Grand Rapids

The Woodbridge N. Ferris Building is a historic landmark that has evolved through various roles over its lifetime. Originally serving as a U.S. District Court and Post Office, the building is now home to the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) and classrooms and offices for Kendall College of Art and Design, a part of Ferris State University. Before its current use, the building also served as the home of the Grand Rapids Art Museum until its relocation in 2007 and even housed the field office of Congressman Gerald R. Ford.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the structure exemplifies Academic Classic architecture, with its U-shaped design, stone-clad exterior, and Renaissance Revival-style elements. Distinctive features include its large arched windows, half-round engaged columns, and a classic cornice with pediments, showcasing a harmonious blend of form and function.

Renovated in 2012 the 91,000-square-foot building marked a significant expansion of Ferris State University in Grand Rapids. The building’s transformation from its historic federal use into an educational and cultural hub was a milestone for the university, which previously lacked a facility honoring its founder, Woodbridge N. Ferris. This redevelopment added modern classrooms, studios, office spaces, and exhibition areas, further enriching the Kendall College of Art and Design campus.
