Woodlawn Cemetery Confederate Memorial, West Palm Beach

Woodlawn Cemetery Confederate Memorial, West Palm Beach

The Woodlawn Cemetery was established in 1905 by philanthropist Henry Flagler. Originally a 17-acre pineapple grove, Flagler transformed the land into what he envisioned as the most beautiful cemetery in the state, modeled after New York’s Woodlawn Cemetery. The site’s original iron gate bore a solemn, poetic inscription-“That which is so universal as death must be a blessing”-whose author remains unknown.

The Confederate Memorial within Woodlawn honors a chapter of Southern history and lies among more than 10,000 burials recorded through the end of 1994. Over the decades, the cemetery has expanded by reconfiguring pathways and removing original landscaping to accommodate additional lots.
