World's Tallest File Cabinet, Burlington
World's Tallest File Cabinet is one of Burlington’s most distinctive public artworks, turning an ordinary office object into a striking and slightly ironic landmark. Created in 2002 by artist Bren Alvarez, the installation takes the form of a towering filing cabinet rising over 40 feet high, assembled from welded metal drawers around a central steel support.
The piece draws its meaning from the long-delayed Southern Connector project—often abbreviated as “So. Co.”—a proposed highway extension first discussed in 1965. Its 38 drawers represent the number of years the project remained in limbo at the time of construction, transforming bureaucratic delay into something visible and quietly humorous. Over time, the sculpture has taken on a life of its own, with birds occasionally nesting in its upper compartments.
Often described as “the world’s tallest file cabinet,” the work stands out not only for its scale but also for its commentary on infrastructure and planning. In 2020, it was relocated about 100 feet from its original site and placed on a new pedestal at 208 Flynn Avenue, increasing its visibility. That same year, it became part of a wider artistic response during the South End Art Hop, when the exhibition File Herd: On the Road to Extinction surrounded the site with creatively reimagined file cabinets.
