Wright Park Arboretum, Tacoma (must see)
Wright Park Arboretum is a historic green space shaped by mature trees, lawns, walking paths, and quiet garden areas. Established in 1886, it began with a land donation that carried a clear condition: at least 300 ornamental shade trees had to be planted within four years. That requirement helped define the park’s character from the start. Its 27 acres, spread across 10 city blocks, still reflect the idea of a civic landscape created for shade, recreation, and public gathering.
The arboretum is best known for its collection of more than 600 native and exotic trees, with species from North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Many are over a century old, including several Washington State Champion Trees. Their size and variety give the park a strong botanical identity, while damage from the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 adds a note of loss and renewal.
A major landmark is the W. W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory, a Victorian-style glasshouse that opened in 1908. Its 12-sided dome and side wings are made with roughly 3,500 panes of glass, creating a delicate contrast with the heavy canopies outside. Inside, visitors find palms, orchids, ferns, flowering plants, a Ponderosa lemon tree known for its oversized fruit, golden dart frogs, and hand-carved stone sculptures.
The park also carries traces of local culture beyond its plant collections, from historic sculptures to long-standing community use. Lawns, play areas, shaded paths, and the glasshouse add variety. For tourists, the arboretum offers a quiet break, with its main appeal in walking beneath trees that have grown here for generations.
