Yokohama Foreign Cemetery, Yokohama

Yokohama Foreign Cemetery, Yokohama

The Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery in Japan is a significant historical site reflecting the city's diverse past. Established in 1854 after the death of a Marine from one of Commodore Perry's ships, it gained official recognition from the Japanese government in 1861. This acknowledgment underlines the lasting presence of Yokohama's international community. The cemetery was designed to cater to Christian foreigners, housing around 4,500 graves from over 40 countries. Among those buried are government officials, missionaries, educators, journalists, merchants, sailors, and soldiers, all contributing to Yokohama's growth as a prominent port city.

Situated near Motomachi on a hill, the cemetery offers panoramic views of the Minato Mirai area. Despite facing challenges such as the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the 2011 earthquake, which caused significant damage, the site remains culturally significant.

Open to the public on weekends and national holidays from March to December, visitors can explore the cemetery and visit the museum located near the main entrance, open daily throughout the year. The museum showcases photographs and profiles of notable figures from Yokohama's early foreign community, providing a glimpse into life 150 years ago when Yokohama was surrounded by rice paddies and had pristine bay views.

Even when closed, people can stroll along the cemetery's perimeter, glance over the low black fence, and read inscriptions on gravestones, turning the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery into more than just a burial ground but a living testament to a bygone era.
