Yokohama Marine Tower, Yokohama

Yokohama Marine Tower, Yokohama

Yokohama Marine Tower stands as an iconic symbol in the Naka Ward of Yokohama. Towering at a height of 106 meters (348 feet), it features an observation deck located 100 meters above ground, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding cityscape and beyond. Recognizable by its distinctive light characteristic—a flash every twenty seconds alternating between red and green—the tower has served as a beacon of the city since its inauguration in 1961. Originally, the tower shaft was illuminated in green and red to match its markings; however, following its reopening in May 2009, it now shines in brilliant white light.

Celebrated as the "tallest lighthouse in the world," a title whose legitimacy varies depending on the criteria for lighthouses, the Yokohama Marine Tower offers visitors the unique opportunity to gaze upon Mount Fuji from its observation deck on clear days. The tower's history took a significant turn on December 25, 2006, when it temporarily closed its doors for renovations. It was subsequently acquired by the city of Yokohama, which undertook its restoration. These efforts culminated in a grand reopening on May 23, 2009, marking the city's 150th anniversary celebrations.

Yokohama Marine Tower is not just a place for panoramic views; it also hosts a media art gallery on the 30th floor that integrates digital art displays with the stunning city views, especially enchanting in the evening. The tower's lower floors are a hive of activity, featuring a range of shops and restaurants. Visitors can purchase original souvenirs from the Marine Tower Shop on the 2nd floor, or enjoy outdoor dining with fine Italian cuisine at ‘The Terrace’ restaurant on the 4th floor. With observation decks on the 29th and 30th floors, the tower offers unparalleled views over the Minato Mirai seafront area and Yokohama Bay Bridge, making it a must-visit landmark for both locals and tourists alike.
