Zoological Gardens of Brno, Brno
The Zoological Gardens of Brno, located in the Brno-Bystrc district near the picturesque Brno Reservoir, is a sprawling 65-hectare zoo that showcases a diverse collection of animals from all continents except Antarctica. Opened on August 30, 1953, the zoo is a major attraction funded by the city of Brno and situated on the scenic Monk’s Hill.
The Brno Zoo is renowned for its polar bear breeding program and unique efforts to breed the endangered Warren’s galliwasp (Celestus warreni). Visitors can explore a variety of captivating exhibits, including the "Beringia" exhibit, which highlights the wildlife from the region between Siberia and Alaska. This exhibit is home to Kamchatka brown bears, arctic foxes, and wolverines. Other notable attractions include the "Tiger Rocks" and "Tropical Kingdom" pavilions, which feature exotic species like tigers, Komodo dragons, and sand cats.
The zoo also prides itself on its more recent additions, such as a special aviary for bald eagles, a walk-through exhibit of kangaroos, and an African village with a stunning view of reticulated giraffes, Chapman’s zebras, and blesboks. Among the zoo’s most celebrated residents are Lolek and Kivu, a pair of lions who have recently returned to the zoo.
For younger visitors, the Children’s Zoo is a popular destination, offering a petting zoo, playgrounds, and interactive activities. The Brno Zoo places a strong emphasis on ecological education, organizing various educational programs and field trips designed to engage schools and the general public in wildlife conservation and environmental awareness.
Throughout the summer, the zoo hosts a range of events catering to both children and adults, making it a vibrant and educational destination for visitors of all ages.
