Zuivelfabriek Freia (Dairy Freya), Arnhem
Dairy Freya, now preserved in the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem, offers a compelling look at the rise of industrial dairy production in the Netherlands. Originally founded in 1879 by Mindert Bokma de Boer, a pioneering agricultural innovator, Freya was the very first dairy factory in the province of Friesland. Bokma de Boer’s inspiration came from a study trip to Denmark, where centralised dairies were already transforming rural economies. His new factory in Veenwouden marked a decisive break from traditional farm-based production: Freya introduced steam-powered, hygienic, and large-scale processing at a time when such methods were revolutionary. Steam drove the machines, heated the milk for pasteurisation, and supported cleaning systems that set new standards for quality and efficiency.
Despite early financial challenges, Freya evolved into one of the region’s leading dairies. Ownership passed through several hands, including Hero Brouwer and later Gentius Wybrandi, before the Anema family took charge and guided the factory through decades of expansion. By 1918, the complex had been connected to the electricity grid, and a year later it employed more than fifty workers-evidence of its growing importance in Friesland’s agricultural landscape. Freia continued to operate until 1970, when shifts in the dairy sector and declining milk supply brought its operations to an end.
In 1991, the oldest section of the factory was carefully dismantled and rebuilt in Arnhem. The reconstructed complex, complete with a chimney adapted to suit its wooded surroundings, now stands as a rare surviving example of early industrial dairy heritage, offering visitors an engaging window into the Netherlands’ transformation from farmstead production to modern food processing.
