2-Days Itinerary in Tirana, Tirana, Albania
The Balkan Peninsula lies off the Southern coast of Europe. Bordering this peninsula are the stunning seas of the Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean and the Black Sea. One of the 12 countries of the Balkan states is Albania. Our 50 Days of Balkans Road Trip has led us to this country on our 16th Day.
Albania is the 7th country we have visited and Day 16 had turned out to be quite interesting. The Republic of Albania, or Albania, faces the Adriatic Sea of the western section of the Balkan peninsula. The tumultuous war and historical background of Albania has intrigued visitors to spend at least a 2-day trip in this marvellous country. Why not do the same? During WWII, Russian leader, Joseph Stalin, “helped” Albania liberate from the war but was dragged into the communist party. Until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Albania had remained a communist country. About Albania - Tirana and Beyond
We had Albania on our itinerary in 2020 when we had to cut our travels short and return home due to the Pandamit. It’s taken four years to get Albania and other Balkan countries back onto our itinerary. We are so glad to finally visit and to learn all About Albania – Tirana and Beyond.
Best Things to Do in Tirana, Albania
Tirana, Albania’s capital, is a city full of history, energy, and charm. It’s certainly not the most beautiful city I’ve ever visited, far from it. However, as a solo traveller, I felt safe wandering around by myself. It was fascinating to explore, and I really loved the food.
What to Do in Tirana When it Rains
Tirana, Albania’s Capital is famous for its busy streets, bustling outdoor cafés, and colourful architecture. However, during my nearly two-week stay in the city, I experienced seven days of rain straight, so what do you do in Tirana when it rains?
Sweet Freedoms in Tirana
Today’s Albania is very different and in the heart of Tirana we found three striking places of worship. All lie in the immediate vicinity of Skanderbeg Square where Hoxha’s statue once stood. One, the mosque, is historic; prior to Hoxha’s time the country was the only predominantly Muslim one in Europe. The other two are modern, both Christian cathedrals.
Exploring Tirana, The Capital of Albania
Kotor was lovely, albeit quick, and I’m now on a bus on my way to Tirana, Albania. I met a lovely couple at a cafe in Mostar who said they loved Tirana. I’m looking forward to lower prices, and discovering more about this part of the world.
