Matcha, matcha, matcha – I am obsessed with matcha. While the best matcha can undoubtedly be found in Japan, there are actually a lot of really great matcha cafés in Seoul, too. In fact, South Korea is also a big producer of local matcha powders, especially in the southern provinces and on Jeju Island. The history of tea in Korea dates back all the way to Tang Dynasty China, when the healthy green plant first found its way to the Korean Peninsula. Back then, tea was mainly used as a medicinal herb, but green tea powder (matcha!) also came to be used for drinks on ceremonial occasions and for spirit offerings (very much like in Japan).

The first tea plants in Korea were planted near the Ssanggyesa monastery on Mt.
