Matcha, matcha, matcha – I am obsessed with matcha. While the best matcha can undoubtedly be found in Japan, there are actually a lot of really great matcha cafés in Seoul, too. In fact, South Korea is also a big producer of local matcha powders, especially in the southern provinces and on Jeju Island. Either way, matcha is incredibly sexy (and healthy and delicious!), which is why you should absolutely check out some of these delicious matcha cafés in Seoul below.

The history of tea in Korea dates back all the way to Tang Dynasty China, when the healthy green plant first found its way to the Korean Peninsula. Back then, tea was mainly used as a medicinal herb, but green tea powder (matcha!) also came to be used for drinks on ceremonial occasions and for spirit offerings (very much like in Japan).

The first tea plants in Korea were planted near the Ssanggyesa monastery on Mt. Jiri in Hadong County, Gyeongnam Province. Since then, Korea’s cultivation and production of tea has flourished and developed. Today, Korea is a main producer of green tea and also produces a lot of matcha powder and the number of matcha bars or matcha cafés in Seoul and other cities across South Korea continues to grow. ......
