A Bulgarian Adventure: Sofia’s Charm & Rila’s Natural Wonder, Sofia, Bulgaria

I arrived in Sofia on an overnight bus from Bucharest Romania, exhausted but eager to see what the city had to offer. Exhausted because prior to boarding the bus at Bucharest I was on another 7hr bus ride from Chisinau Moldova, followed by a tram, metro & then a bus ride to the boarding point. Finally after 24hrs since I started from Moldova, as the bus rolled into the Sofia station in the early morning light, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. A year earlier, during my travels through West Asia, I had met a fellow traveler in Sheki, Azerbaijan, who spoke rather dismissively about Sofia, calling it unremarkable and lacking charm. That conversation, had left me with fairly low expectations about the city. And unlike other European capitals that had long been on my must-visit list, Sofia had never really stood out. It was more of a convenient stop between destinations rather than a place I was particularly excited about. Or so I thought !!

But from the moment I stepped off the bus and began exploring, those doubts quickly faded. There was something about Sofia’s atmosphere—the quiet hum of the city waking up, the blend of old and new architecture, and the ease with which history and modern life coexisted—that immediately intrigued me. As I walked from the bus stop to the hostel, I was pretty intrigued by the tram system, which reminded me of Melbourne—efficient, charming, and a great way to see the city. And over the next 5 or 6 days I spent my time here, I loved how easy it was to hop on and off, seamlessly exploring different districts without the hassle of long walks or expensive taxis. Whether it was riding past Soviet-era buildings or gliding through tree-lined streets, the experience made navigating Sofia both enjoyable and stress-free.
